WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL RENT?
Occupational rent refers to the rent paid by a buyer who has taken occupation of a property before the transfer of ownership is finalized. It is a temporary rental arrangement that occurs during the transition period between the buyer’s occupation and the completion of the property transfer process.

WHY PAY OCCUPATIONAL RENT?
Occupational rent compensates the seller or developer for the use and occupation of the property before ownership transfer.
It allows buyers to secure their desired property and enjoy homeownership benefits before completion.

HOW OCCUPATIONAL RENT IS DETERMINED?
The amount of occupational rent is negotiated between the parties or specified in the purchase agreement. It can be based on market rental value or a percentage of the purchase price.
Occupational rent is typically paid on a monthly basis and ceases once the property transfer is completed.

BUYER PROTECTION AND LEGISLATION
South African legislation protects buyers by requiring funds be held in an interest-bearing account managed by designated attorneys. In case of developer non-compliance, all funds are refunded to the buyer, ensuring financial protection.
